Our blog chronicles the lives of two thirty-somethings living and loving in Oakland. We talk a lot about food, wine, travel and our house - a 1916 Craftsman in a part of town that was once described as "up and coming."

I think the heat is finally starting to get to me. That and the not sleeping through the night stuff. This morning we got up early and scavenged together a breakfast of leftovers in the kitchen. I had anticipated a bagel but as we learned bagels, plastic bags, and tropical humidity do not go well together. It looked like a...

I don't have any pictures of the beginning of our day because we went kayaking up and down the Hanalei River and as long as there was the chance that we, or our stuff, would be getting wet I didn't bring my iPhone. It was quite the adventure. Alan and I are decidedly not kayaking experts, even though we've attempted to kayak...

I slept terribly the night before, so Alan found me passed out on the couch around 8:30 a.m. We kicked off the morning with breakfast at the condo (a huge money saver, btw), and then read up on hikes in Waimea Canyon. Everything we read said to go in the afternoon when the light was better, so we took our sweet time getting...KAUAI DAY 3

Today we kicked off the day with bread pudding french toast I soaked overnight in eggs & milk, topped with coconut syrup. We used Hawaiian sweet bread, but challah or brioche would be an excellent substitute. With maple syrup this would make an excellent Christmas morning breakfast. From there we drove out of Princeville...

Today we spent the day at two beaches - Ke'e and Hanalei Bay. The snorkeling at Ke'e was fantastic. I saw so many fish and because the water was like glass I was able to get really close to the reef without freaking myself out. Unfortunately the wind at Hanalei Bay was kind of insane so we couldn't really have our umbrella...

I'm not sure why I bother bringing cameras on vacation anymore. I'd say easily 80% of the pictures I take are done so with my iPhone. It's just so much easier, and yeah, I love those damn Instagram filters.

So yeah. I kind of love my birthday and kind of make a pretty big deal out of it. On my 21st birthday a bunch of us went out to Pittsburgh's most famous bar for 21st birthday celebrations at 12:01 a.m., only to have the place shut down an hour later because of a brawl. At least I think that's what happened. As you can imagine...FOOD STUFFS

So I mentioned on Twitter yesterday (or was it the day before?) sort of in passing that I'm done with Paleo, with gluten-free, with all of it. For over a year I've been cutting out most of the foods that I love in an effort to improve my gut health and naturally control my terrible GERD. Some days were better than others, but...I'D RATHER HAVE MR. ROGERS

I have well-meaning, well-intentioned, but slightly strange neighbors. At least, strange to me. To be clear, it's not all of them. Just some who really confuse me. There are some we really like.An example: a couple of years ago people that have absolutely no experience in the grocery or hospitality industry tried to write up...

A couple of weeks back I posted this photo as inspiration for a bedroom makeover.A few hours later, I dragged Alan off to Ikea where we picked up the plaid duvet cover. A week or so after that we painted the bedroom Bittersweet Chocolate from Benjamin Moore. And then I found some really pretty textured sheers at Target.
Yesterd...
