Blog of the Month - October 2011

houseblogging-blogofthemonthbadge-october2011

Over at Our Concrete Home, Andrea, Nate, and their two feline friends (Pixel & Loki) are busy making their concrete block house a home. Since purchasing their 1950's house in 2009, they've filled their blog with details on all kinds of DIY projects (including painting inside and out, replacing windows and doors, removing tired landscaping and tearing out old flooring, to name a few). Alongside their project work, they're sharing some decorating inspiration, their entertaining adventures, and the experience of being featured on Bath Crashers. Our personal favorite, though, are the Feline Friday posts featuring all of Pixel and Loki's mischief … they make us smile every time! Be sure to stop on over and get to know this great blog … we're sure you won't be disappointed!

November Favorites, Firsts and Surprises

Authors: Andrea

I am switching up my favorite posts a little and experimenting a combo of favorites, firsts & surprises. Previously, I tried five favorites and one regret, but doing the regret was too negative so I hope this new format works out better!

Monthly Favorites

This month I have four favorites.

November was all about the...

Holiday piece by piece

Authors: Andrea

This year I am easing into the holiday decorations with greenery and a few craft projects.

Our grocery store had amazing pink Christmas cacti that I had to pick up. I am bound and determined to keep this one alive.

I just found this simple tutorial on how to take care and promote it blooming that should help me out.

I also purchased a...

Alt Thanksgiving 2012

Authors: Andrea

My family has a tradition of having a second Thanksgiving dinner every year we affectionately call Alt (or Anti) Thanksgiving. We spend a day cooking a new cuisine every year as a family then enjoy it. (It really takes about 2-3 days to research all the foods to cook, shop at specialty stores and make everything from scratch, but...

Feline Friday: The cave

Authors: Andrea

I bought this fleece cat cave last year thinking the cats would love to curl up in it. And (of course) they ignored it after an initial sniffing around. Last weekend I decided to put it out again as a last ditched effort before giving it away.

Pixel relented and got in during my weekly Sister Night with Adie. I kept my cool and...

Discovering our pineapple guava (feijoa) fruit

Authors: Andrea

Funny thing happened the other day in the backyard, I discovered a new fruit tree. Our pineapple guava tree isn’t exactly new (it came with the house), but the fact that it produced edible fruits is a brand new discovery. This year our tree produced these amazing egg size fruits. Our neighborhood squirrels seemed to be...

Making a bay wreath

Authors: Andrea

I’ve always loved to decorate for the holidays with fresh wreaths and garlands. Leave it to Martha Stewart to inspire me in my teens with her elaborate Christmas special on HGTV. Once I moved out of my parents house, I usually splurged on a fresh pine wreath for the rental door, but I never have made my one until now.

On my...

No Buy November

Authors: Andrea

This may be the hardest month to stick to a budget, but I’ve come to the conclusion that my spending has gotten out of control and it’s time to rein it in. I have a lot of big projects and events next year that I need to focus on saving for. So in an effort to focus and spend wisely I am going on a spending freeze for...
