From Hovel to Home
I'm Britten from Montana. My husband and I are in the middle of our 3rd to-the-studs remodel. Our current project is a 1953 ranch we purchased as a repo. We are slowly transforming it from hovel to home.
Hardwood Floors - Before After
- Published on Thursday, 16 May 2013
Authors: BrittenI am pleased to announce we are finally done refinishing the hardwood floors. These floors are 60 years old and we were the first people to refinish or even maintain them so they were in rough shape. It was a tedious, miserable project and I never want to do it again, but at least they finally look nice. Living Room - B...
A Sneak Peek At The Floors
- Published on Monday, 06 May 2013
Authors: BrittenAfter another marathon weekend on the house we are looking better than ever. Luke only works a half day on Fridays so he was already home and sanding the floor by the time I got off work. It took quite a bit of sanding to get the uneven boards level. While Luke worked the drum sander I took care of the edges of the room and t...
It's Looking Better
- Published on Thursday, 02 May 2013
Authors: BrittenThe blog quality is about to improve. No, I'm not going to start proofreading my posts, but at least the photos will be getting better. Luke and I agreed to buy a camera that could take wide angle photos. We are planning on selling the house ourselves and thought it would be nice to have better pictures. Then my brother offered...

Authors: BrittenSo for a quick summary of where we're at: The drywall is up, taped and textured. It's been a long, tedious process because we kept the original ceilings and they needed a lot of attention. Now we are turning our attention to the floors. We have red oak flooring in the bedrooms, hall and living rooms (really old photo, the floors...
Look - We've Got Walls
- Published on Friday, 26 April 2013
Authors: BrittenIt's been almost three weeks since we hung drywall in the living room, kitchen and hallway. I finished the taping and texturing last week, but after wasting half of last weekend working on my truck and prepping the kitchen floor my walls remained unfinished. So this week I finally put on my respirator and started work on the wa...
It's Not Always A Clean Slate
- Published on Thursday, 25 April 2013
Authors: BrittenWe may have replaced all the drywall on the walls, but we're not starting with a clean slate. We kept the original ceilings and they need some serious attention. The living room was already a mess because of the popcorn ceilings. Then Luke collapsed the ceiling while working in the attic and left me with this hole to re...
Work Party Weekend
- Published on Monday, 08 April 2013
Authors: BrittenAfter months of slow progress on the house we are finally moving at a fast pace. Demo last weekend accomplished more than I expected so I took some time off this week to wire in the kitchen. The old kitchen only had a few working outlets and only one of them was a three prong where I could plug in my laptop. Now I've got so many...

Authors: BrittenThis weekend we continued what we statted last week, the total destruction of our home demo of the kitchen. We ripped down the remaining sheetrock on two walls and removed the kitchen closet and linen closet. Since we already had the truck filled and were going to have to make a trip to the dump Luke decided we should gut...
Getting Ready For The Next Big Thing
- Published on Monday, 25 March 2013
Authors: BrittenEven while we were working on finishing the laundry rooms we are gathering the last of the materials for the another big project : the kitchen. It's hard to get a good feel for our kitchen/dining room without seeing it in person. However, I'll do my best to let you see what we are planning. When we bought the house the...
Laundry Room Before After
- Published on Friday, 22 March 2013
Authors: BrittenFor someone who hates doing laundry I am strangely excited to have a finished laundry room. It is gratifying to see that all this work has paid off. The laundry room is currently nicer than our kitchen. But I needn't brag. I'll let the photos speak for themselves. Before - The laundry area was part of the kitchen/dining are...
