The solution to the upper rake problem turns out to be both a bit complicated and really easy: we just have to cut and weld a horizontal piece on there, and it will work. As it happens, Noel is going to have some piano-related welding done soon, so he will do that bit of welding at the same time.

Noel picked up the new, taller rakes from Economy Lumber today, and the saga of our upper railing continues because the lower posts are really in the wrong spot and the rakes don't fit right. You can kind of see it in the next photo, that the spot where the rail would attach over the stairs has a step right next to it.

Or rather, too short. The raked segments of railing we got turned out to be too short to meet current code. So all we got done today was installing the last of the straight sections and returning the wrong bits.

We didn't get much done this week, because over last weekend one of Goldie's lumps -- all Labradors develop lumps, it just seems to be in the breed -- got very large and red, and so we took her to the vet, then to the canine oncologist, and then yesterday she had surgery to remove a mast cell tumour.

A big thanks to everybody who came to celebrate our new deck(ish) today.
The railing was not finished. We got the railing parts from Economy Lumber last week and were all ready to install when we realized we'd gotten some incorrect parts, and not gotten some needed things. These were not stock items, so we had to wait until tomorrow...

This is only tangentially about the house, but I thought I'd show you our new piano. Noel went and picked it up in Reno on Thursday, arriving back home in the middle of the night. And last night we moved it, with the help of our neighbor Richard, into the house.

On Tuesday the mobile diesel mechanics stopped by and fixed the truck (which now starts easily, yay). When that was done Noel picked up the railings from Economy Lumber.
