We purchased our house in July 2004, after returning to Portland (Oregon, not Maine) from Providence, Rhode Island. Most other houses we looked at before finding this one had already been “redone,” usually by a flipper or by a homeowner (both of which have their potential share of problems).

Because so much of this home’s original stained woodwork was intact, we decided to take the plunge. Our previous experience with minor remodeling on three earlier houses somehow led us to believe that we could handle this one. While we’re now at the point were feeling good about the decision, there was a lot of hardship along the way, and our original timeline was off by at least six years.

We spent 8 months in a rental house while doing the major work on the downstairs and demolition on the upper level. Since then, it has been a never-ending stream of weekend projects and vacation time used to make progress on the bigger stuff. We are hoping that by the summer of 2013 we will finally be “done” but, seriously? Don't we know better by now?

Our first LED light bulbs!

Authors: julio

We’ve been wanting to try out LED light bulbs for quite some time now, but the cost has always been a bit too high. We had been holding out for the Switch bulbs after I read a Wired article on them about a year ago, but they took a long time to be released, not to mention that they didn’t come anywhere close to the...

Planter Boxes (not ours)

Authors: julio

A couple of weeks ago we built some planter boxes for the kids’ school. I didn’t take any before pictures, but the old ones were pretty close to disintegration. We used the awesome 2×10 rough cut cedar from Mr. Plywood. The large size meant we could build the boxes with only a single piece of wood for each side....

It’s done. Nothing more to say. It’s a pretty massive improvement over the primed doors.

New front fence

Authors: julio

Well, here it is…the final piece of the yard project. Until we pulled out the dirt and brought up the gravel last year, there had never been any connectivity between the back yard and the small section of front yard (nor to the garage roof.) I had to open up the middle of the fence, so that the landscapers could get access down...

Railings!

Authors: julio

The front railings are now done, barring some minor caulking and painting. To bring you back up to speed, the railings on our front steps gradually rotted away after buying the house in 2004. Detail-oriented readers will notice that the date of that last railing post is September 2011, so clearly, they did not “in place and...

Garage paint progress

Authors: julio

Over the last week we’ve been painting the garage doors. We actually beat the remodeler’s equation somewhat, as it’s only been two years since the new doors were installed. The doors and lower trim have been completed, and I bolted on a strip of 2x4s under the roof edge, so that we can install a gutter. Water...

Patio Speaks

Authors: julio

This year we finally put up some permanently mounted outdoor speakers, as opposed to dragging out my old receiver and bookshelf speakers each summer and hacking in a sound source. I set up a Squeezebox server a few years ago, and it is without a doubt the absolute best way to get music streamed around the house. The only downside is...

We were hacked!

Authors: julio

We recently found out that our domain hosting was compromised (by a Chinese IP address), and malware was loaded onto our site. We are in the process of moving all our posts over to a new WordPress install, so please bear with us as we rebuild the site. It will probably look funky for a bit as we are going to rework the design as we...

Playhouse update

Authors: julio

You may remember the playhouse? The one that we allegedly were building for the children but was really designed for us to use after they got tired of it? Well, it’s seen its first construction activity since 2010, when the first ‘X’ railings were installed. Yet another time where I would have sworn that I did that l...
